Cold coming to the Uintas

A visit to the High Uintas Wilderness area of Northern Utah yesterday reminded me of the extreme climate of that high altitude range. The temp at my home in Central Utah was 35 degrees above zero when I started my drive at 3 AM. Two hours later when I arrived at this destination the temp there was right at Zero and got colder closer to sunrise.

The cold was tolerable, but my goal was to return to a spot in the middle of the river that offered a spectacular view of the mountains. It really got cold standing in the icy stream waiting with my camera on a tripod for the light that didn't ever materialize. Finally, I gave up and returned the the warmth of the heater in my truck. Too bad the road to this area will be closed for the winter season and there will be several feet of snow until late June next year.

It was still fun to hike to a lower part of the stream which had frozen over and shoot some images with the new snow, frozen river and the mountains.
