European praying mantis, female (Mantis religiosa)

Reveler Conservation Area

The second of two female mantids I saw the other day, both apparently looking for a place to lay their eggs. I think these insects are quite charming... they just seem to have a big personality!

We were so excited to see the one at our house the other day. We hadn't seen one in a few years. It was so interesting to see it's reaction to Della. While the mantis was interested in my husband and didn't' seem afraid of him. However, when she saw Della her arms came flying up and she took a very defensive posture. Della is pretty gentle and I was sure she wouldn't hurt the mantis. I didn't allow Tug out to see it as he is such a goofball he might have stepped on her by accident!

an edgy capture of the moment...on the prowl, or simply pregnant, they certainly sport a large presence..
