European praying mantis, female (Mantis religiosa)

Reveler Conservation Area

I really like these large insects. They seem to have a definite personality, and so no wonder that some people keep them as pets. This female is probably looking for somewhere to lay eggs, and she wasn't interested in sitting still so I coaxed her onto my fingers hoping for a better shot, but no luck! She has things to do, places to go.

I had one as a pet, so funny that you said that. I was probably 10 yrs. old. Her name was Dina. Amazing (but gross) to watch them eat. V

Oh my! I think they're fascinating to look at -- in pictures -- but I'd be terrified to have it walking around my hand. And look at the size of it! V.
