Cascade Gardens, 140 Cascade Rd South Hobart, Tasmania

As mentioned in some of the earlier images, the reason that we were in South Hobart was to take a tour called "Louisa's Walk". This was "walking theatre" with two main actors; a husband-and-wife team (though on the day we went Louisa was played by a younger understudy) who told the story of a woman named Louisa who was transported to Tasmania from the time that she was convicted of a crime. It took us through the story of her transport to Tasmania, to her incarceration in the "Female Factory" which was a euphemism for a women's jail / sweatshop.

The walk started just opposite the Cascade Brewery, and involved walking through the park to the remains of the Female Factory with the two actors changing into different garments (or, more precisely, accessories since they had to make do with whatever could be carried in a small hand basket) to play different parts along the way.

Unfortunately the walk has been discontinued. I found a page on the Female Factory's website which indicated that the two actors (Chris and Judith) decided to stop offering the walk "recently". Which is great, very useful, but recently compared to what? I swear, there seems to have been some sort of virus that has invaded people's brains rendering them completely incapable of putting blanking dates on things. You look at websites and they will talk about something being on on the 12th of April without giving any indication of which year they're talking about. You get letters from banks, telcos, utility companies all without dates. How hard is it to put a bloody date on something so that if someone looks at it six months later or a year later they know exactly what time you were talking about? Sorry, that's my particular rant for the day.

Anyway, that's beside the point. It was a very good performance and it's a pity that it can no longer be seen. The actors do still offer a different performance in the Female Factory itself, but I'm glad that we had the opportunity to see Louisa's Walk while it was still on.

In this shot we see the understudy Louisa getting everyone's details as they arrived for the start of the walk.
