Monkey Slug (Hag Moth) caterpillar (Phobetron pithecium), #4677

Reveler Conservation Area

This side view shows how different these moth caterpillars are to others. Their prolegs have been modified to medial suckers allowing them to slide or glide across the leaf surface as a slug would do, hence the common name for this group of caterpillars. You can see the 'pad' on which they move. This one is moving to the left (its head is on the left side).
