The round tower at Ardmore, Co Waterford, is one of the best preserved in Ireland. Dating from the 12th century, it stand 30m tall. Beside it are the ruins of St Declan's Cathedral.
I'm still trying to fathom the usefulness of it. As an observation post maybe, but it would be largely useless as a fortification. Pretty in its own way, though.
