Palace Of Xerxes - The Doorframes

Persepolis, Iran

This stone relief decorates a doorway of Palace of Xerxes.
It depicts the great king Xerxes leaving the palace with 2 servants protecting him from the sun and the flies with an imbrella.
It is an example of the destruction. Some damages are partly due to natural causes, but the face has been destroyed with a hammer.

The palace of Xerxes, called Hadiš in Persian, "dwelling place", was twice as large as the Palace of Darius.
A terrace connected the two royal mansions, which are not very far apart. Yet, compared to the palace of Darius, the house of Xerxes is badly damaged.
