A Hellenistic stone fire altar
Because of the worshipper’s (or priest’s) Persian-style costume, this altar belongs probably to a fire cult of Iranian origin.
Although the term ‘fire-worshippers’ is primarily associated with Zoroastrians, the idea that Zoroastrians worship fire is originally from anti-Zoroastrian polemic. Instead, fire — even in a Fire temple (the Zoroastrian terms are more prosaic and simply mean ‘house of fire’) — is considered an agent of purity and a symbol of righteousness and truth.
