I’m posting this picture first because it was my favorite from the whole bazaar. There were many honey sellers around, but this man was by himself and had a very orderly and attractive display of his wares. I was intrigued so asked if I could photograph him, and he agreed. Some of you might remember the picture of the honey seller in a parking area who was brilliantly dressed, ostensibly to attract tourists. Part of his costume was a curved dagger at his waist, for show, I'm sure. This man’s dagger was the real thing.
Some background:
Our last destination in Asir Province was this bazaar – selling mainly honey -- in a town whose name I never got. It took a very long time to get there after rushing through the palace/museum complex, having to descend an incredibly steep mountain and then travel for an hour or more through the valley below. The bazaar was interesting and worth visiting, but because we were running so late, it meant going back up another mountain road (a truck route this time) at night in an attempt to catch our various flights back to Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam. We made it to the airport in Abha with just minutes to spare, after the most frightening ride of the entire tour (think passing big trucks on those hairpin curves and in tunnels, in the dark).
This will be a short sub-gallery of the bazaar; a bit too many pictures for the main Asir gallery.
