Hotel baboons (sorry, now publicly viewable!)

Somehow this image was marked not for public viewing. Sorry, I didn't do that, but thought it odd that nobody looked at it ;-). A colleague in Istanbul alerted me to it today!

We really had a great view from our room! This was a group of baboons scavenging the garbage heap on the slope below the hotel. It’s heavily cropped, and not sure how clear they are, but there were a number of babies with them as well. The baboons were everywhere, but were people and camera shy (unless you had food, in which case I understand they can be pretty aggressive), and were extremely hard to photograph from a moving vehicle. Even though the other passengers in our SUV kept announcing baboon sightings to me, the driver would never slow down or stop (like he sees them every day so what’s the big deal, plus he didn’t really speak English, either). As a result, I don’t think I have any decent baboon pictures, much to my regret, and am even considering posting a blurred one later on in the gallery just because it was so cute in its very unfocused sort of way ;-).

This reminds me of a Canadian acquaintance who went to Egypt to collect trash around the pyramids for 40 days. He just wanted to who the Egyptians respect. There really wasn't any garbage management.
