18th April 2014 - bathed in gold

We’ve had amazing weather here of late, even I’ve noticed and given I’ve basically spent the last two weeks in a darkened room typing for all I’m worth, that’s saying something. Today, after waving “bye bye” to my Mum and Dad – yep, they timed their visit to perfection in as much as the moment the shackles are lifted from me, they have to depart! My Mum and Dad often say that whenever they come here it’s always disgusting weather but they certainly can’t complain this time.

In a bid to revitalise and reinvigorate, we’ve donned the walking boots and taken the dogs on a good, long walk, where we found a dry moor, with almost no standing water and burgeoning greenery. For some reason these lovely red leaves caught my eye poking up through the moss and grass. I think they’re bilberry. It’s quite interesting that the bilberries are obviously favoured by the grazing sheep because you only see the plants that have matured enough to fruit in locations where the sheep can’t get to them, so outside the cattle grids on the tops of dry stone walls they manage to flower and fruit but on the open moor they shoot then get munched. That basically makes this sight a spring time only event so in the golden light of late afternoon I recorded it for posterity!
