Here a leafcutter bee is creating its nest case, watched by a sowbug. Leafcutter bees cut circular pieces out of rose leaves, and other plants in the rosaceae family. They then carefully roll them together into a cigar-shaped structure in which they lay eggs, each egg provisioned with a ball of pollen. The nest case is then sealed with a perfectly round leaf segment. These nests are made in bee boxes, under rocks, under logs, or any other protected place. Fascinating to watch. The leafcutter bees are unusual too, in that they carry the pollen on their abdomen rather than in pollen sacs on their legs like most bees.
