Greater bee fly (Bombylius major)

This is an early spring bee fly, found along woodland edges, often nectaring on willow pollen and coltsfoot. It is a good size at about 16 mm. It is a fly, but looks like a bee, as do many of the flies in this family (Bombyliidae), hence the common name.

Great study of its appearance. We have them too, soon in the week or two they will wake up....love to look them hovering on the first flowers of the spring, like small hummingbirds.
