This magnificent altar was created between 1477 and 1489 by Veit Stoss and is the centerpiece of St. Mary's Church. It measures 11 by 13 meters and was higher originally.
I thought the detail in this central part of the altar was simply amazing. Pictured is "The Death of the Virgin." The figure of the youthful Mary is one of the greatest sculptures ever made in Poland, according to my guidebook. Also in the scene is St. John (second R), who, slightly hesitant, is about to put a cape on the fainting Mary.
