In 1945 airline operations were moved to Drew Field, now the location of Tampa International Airport. Peter O. Knight (one of the partners of the law firm Holland & Knight) is a busy general aviation airport with the original seaplane basin on the south side.
While Drew Field, which became today's Tampa International Airport, was open, the more popular Peter O. Knight Airport was opened on Davis Island near Downtown Tampa in 1935, where both Eastern and National Airlines operated until 1946. Drew Field was taken over by the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II which expanded and modernized it. It was renamed Drew Army Air Field and used by the Third Air Force. The Army Air Corps operated C-47, B-17, B-25, AT-6 and others aircraft at Drew Army Air Field during World War II. After the war ended, Eastern and National Air Lines both moved to Drew Field because Peter O. Knight Airport was too small to handle the new Douglas DC-4, DC-6 and Lockheed Constellation prop-liners that were being ordered and placed into service.
