Communist party tent, Kiev, Ukraine, 2009

Ukraine is no longer a communist country, but the party still desires a voice in its affairs. Zealots were passing out information from a tent pitched at the base of Lenin’s statue, which is under repair and shrouded by scaffolding. The red banner still flies over two members who most likely recall headier times.

Ukraine is a democracy now, and the Communist party is just another political element in the mix. I am sure that there are people who were relatively comfortable under Communism and are now less so. Perhaps these folks would like to go back into time, but it's not going to happen. The Ukraine has now had twenty years of democracy, and it seems to be working well.

From the red banner to the dress of these two "comrades", this appears like a page from Soviet history. This image makes me wonder how strong the Communist Party still is and how many still yearn for a more "ordered" time. I was in the Ukraine when it was part of the USSR and I don't remember open displays of free expression as witnessed here, but I guess there are folks who would willingly give up these freedoms in exchange for order and security. A very interesting image, Phil.
