Smoke, Cismigiu Garden, Bucharest, Romania, 2009

It is not the act of smoking that makes this image incongruous. It is the volume, concentration, and position of the smoke at the moment of release that makes it unusual. This man was sitting in the perfect spot for such a shot – at the end of a row of benches, beautifully backlighted before a dark background. This allows the smoke to become translucent and thus more visible Using a long 400mm telephoto focal length, I shot many frames of this man as he smoked, and eventually knew exactly when he would exhale. I pressed the shutter on this shot a moment afterwards, while a cloud of smoke still shrouds much of the man’s head.

Thanks, Brian, for pointing out the symbolic gun pointing at the head. The symbolic gun not only pours forth smoke, but it underscores, as you point out, the self destructive practice of inhaling tobacco. The juxtaposition of smoke, hand, and abstracted head is indeed incongruous, and thus expressive.

Wow, this is a powerful shot... have you noticed that the strong shape of the hand looks like a gun pointing up to his head, combined with the suicidal act of smoking. Another sublime example of incongruity releasing powerful imagination in the viewer.

Bravo Phil! I hope that I can start to tune my eye for such scenes - I will be looking more acutely from now on :)
