Tinsley Cooling Towers R.I.P

Sheffield

Last night (3.00 am 24/8/08) Tinsley Cooling Towers, next to the M1 motorway, were demolished in a controlled explosion.
I imagine it's hard for those not from Sheffield or South Yorkshire to understand why we loved these remnants of Blackburn Meadows Power Station so much.
When returning from long journeys the sight of them always meant we were home.
It will seem strange when I travel to work on Tuesday morning not to see them there (assuming the motorway is safely open by then)
This morning I feel a little sad.

So sad... -- I always used to look out for these on my way home, travelling from Leeds, down the M1....

I get completely lost driving up the M1 now! ;0))

It's a real shame these had to go. And what is to go in their place? Something cold at not nearly as sensually shaped as these I imagine :(

You didn't watch and wave bye-bye then? :(

I love cooling towers. My Dad worked in the power industry so childhood memories, and a love of their beautiful form. What a shame to bring them down!

maybe they should replace them with a giant sign that says 'You Are Home' :D

We had one of those over in the West of Ireland: the only high building within a 50 mile radius. Now it's gone too. See:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbpsOUH409Y&feature=related
