(egretta ardesiaca)
The Black Egret is found commonly in Madagascar. It favours fresh water wetlands, rarely in saltwater areas, so the abundance of flooded paddy fields provide excellent feeding opportunities for these birds. It has a distinctive feeding habit of forming an 'umbrella' with its wings raised over its head.
