Gannets on the Bass Rock

The Bass Rock is the largest single island gannetry in the world with a current population estimate of 140,000 birds. Gannets pair for life and return to exactly the same nest site each year. The offspring when of breeding age will attempt to nest as close as possible to where they were raised. This is leading to more and more over crowding of the colony despite there being suitable adjacent islands onto which the birds could easily expand.
