Rose of Durness

Durness, Sutherland, Scotland

The extreme north of Scotland is blessed with some of the finest beaches on earth, never mind Scotland. They have a purity about them after they have been scoured clean, that is almost divine in its perfection. Durness has one extra little nuance that makes it highly photogenic, the beach has rose coloured granite rocks embedded within it and they are responsible for staining the pale coloured sand with marbled streaks of red. It took a while to find this little outcrop and create a satisfactory composition but the dusty blue clouds and pale straw coloured sunrise with the sun muffled by clouds is very effective at creating the serene mood I was after.
