The calf attempts to nurse, but his mother is too weak to stand. Both await their fate as darkness falls on the Lamar Valley. I left them at this sad point, expecting the worst during the night. But, they survived at least two more days, and were both stronger when I left them for the last time.

Mom is one tough and courageous animal. One can only wonder what injuries she inflicted on her attacker(s) to drive them off.
