Joop's Dog Log - Wednesday May 05

Today is `Liberty Day` in my country, "Bevrijdingsdag", a national holiday.
May 5 is the day World War II ended in The Netherlands.
It`s been 59 years now. But some old Dutch humans still cannot look at German humans
without thinking of the war. Just like some old American humans cannot look at Japanese humans
without thinking of Pear Harbour.
We`re still paying for the terrible mistakes of our grandhumans.
Hardly any of the jewish humans from our area came back from the concentration camps.
Much of our old historic city was shot and burned to pieces in 1945.
Thousands of humans from our area were forced to work in German factories
to take the places of Germans who were fighting the war.
Nobody was the same after that. It`s a big scar. It still is.
But this is 2004. And we were born after the big war.
My humans and I have good friends in Germany. We all feel the same about the past.
Liberty is more than being free from an enemy. It`s also being free from the past.
I`m ready to have some fun!

I wish everyone could look at the past that way, that is the source of so much lingering hatred (similar to black/white in this country). It is a great day for a walk, so I wish she would get off the computer already!!!! -Sarah.

The affect of WWII is so real especially travelling in Europe when the scars are not very far from the surface. A lesson to all countries not to leave scars!

Profound, dear Joop "Free from the past" indeed is true liberty!!! Perhaps the only liberty that matters. How in the world did you get so wise. Can I assume your human has a holiday today and no work. Maybe he will take you for an especially long walk. That bridge in the picture...did your human take a photo of you on the bridge to symbolize crossing...from bondage to liberty...from the past to the present. Hmmmm....I wonder.

Hello Joop! I always wished to have a Liberty Day too, but up to now I never heard anybody speak for it in this country! For my generation it was not important to be proud of a homeland like this and the times we could feel a little less ashamed were rare. Maybe the time when Mr. Willy Brand asked us "to try a little more democracy" when he initiated the so called "policy of detente". We did, had tough argueing with our parents, left our homes as soon as possible to live in a different manner and way...be different, think different, act different. Some of us succeeded in our very small private circles...with the best of luck our children will carry this "New German behaviour" further, but the next generation doesn`t care for policy, environmental pollution or our dark history, all they want is fun without brain!Let them...and if I should be the last "mature hippie citizen of the world".....

I agree, the past has passed and the best thing to do is learn from mistakes and keep your eyes on the future!

Hoi JOOP. Groetjes JOOP.

Learn from the past so we don`t have to repeat it (like Bush`s doing to us now) otherwise, we live in the present!

Yesterday was Cinco de Mayo (Mexican Independence Day) with lots of celebrations in this part of the world. So, I guess it`s nice to think about something positive, instead of the wars that they had to endure to become independent. :-)
