Joop's Dog Log - Wednesday Feb 04 (2)

Bridgehouse on the Noord-Willemskanaal

This is a bridgehouse. You can see it better in the next picture.
The sign sais: "de brug wordt in combinatie bediend".
That means they’re operating the bridge from another location with a remote control.
They have camera’s here so they know when a ship is coming.
A few years ago each bridge still had its own bridgehuman.
One of them used to sit right here where the sign is now. But that became too expensive.
So now a bridgehuman sits somewhere at a central location in front of a row of monitor screens,
and he operates all bridges from there.
But last year the bridgehuman made a mistake. He opened the wrong bridge.
With a car still on that bridge!
The driver paniced, got out of the car, and ran away in terror.
He saw the bridge go up, and he saw how his car rolled back and crashed.
This was later called "a human mistake".
Today we have many thousands of unemployed humans in our country.
And bridgehuman is not a bad job.
So uh, does it take a dog to come up with a suggestion to prevent further human mistakes…?

Oh wow. Actually, I *love* bridges. And you are right; I think it would be a great job for someone! They obviously need MORE people doing it.

Joop, you are SO smart. :-)

Moin, Joop-man...apart of this serious topic...YOU and your shadow look so nice today!!!!!!!!!!! We do not have bridgemen, but ferrymen: in the summer season you can go over the Elbe-Lübeck-Chanal in the village called Seven-Oaks which is a few kilometers from Güster...when the log is still alive then we will go there with DKB to take some photos....don`t pay the ferryman..

"Good morning, Joop! Yes, this is a serious topic... I love humans, although I do have the feeling that they tend to make mistakes sometimes. I guess that´s human. At least they SAY it´s human... Well, I don´t think I make mistakes but my human says it´s not right to bark like a mad dog when someone rings the door bell. And Tizuka told me how to steal tomatoes and other tidbits from the fridge but my human always tells me off when I do it. Oh, dear. Humans are so complicated!
But anyway, you look shiny today !" Flô

Oh dear, Joop. You mean you haven`t yet discovered that funny thing about humans, how they NEVER do things that are sensible. Especially when it comes to mixing all the people who are out of work with all the things that really need doing. Why that wouldn`t be modern, to have a human doing this work, even tho there are humans who need work and work that needs doing. I dunno, Joop, but sometimes humans confuse me too!

Being a bridgehuman seemes like honest, honorable work, especially pleasant if dogs dropped by now and then. I don`t understand anymore than you why the modern work seems duty bound not only to have fewer jobs, but to wring any pleasure out of the jobs there are. I cannot imagine looking at video screens is more pleasurable than looking out this window at you!

Someday perhaps humans will learn to listen to the other animals, you suppose?

Hi Joop, sorry I haven`t been able to visit lately....hopefully things will get better soon.... we have `bridgemen` in my town, who work the locks on the canal, and there is one `swing` bridge as well. The canal is frozen right now, and won`t be open till the end of May, so the bridgemen are all in Florida enjoying their holidays. They do have a central station where they radio to one another that there are boats coming up the canal, but they don`t use video, sounds like asking for an accident to happen...
I`ll post photos, once the weather is nicer... Sam likes to swim there.

Sam LOVES the deep snow, I can`t keep him on the path, he must go through the deepest drifts...he wasn`t really stuck, just pausing for some breath! Its very light and fluffy snow, so lots of fun to jump in for dogs and children (and big humans too !)

That is an interesting story. I would have been terrified if I had been in that car and I think I would have run away, too.
Humans, particularly ones in our country, like to save money at the expense of the welfare of others. Like GWB...he`s famous for saying we have hard choices for domestic programs because of the tight budget, yet he gives large drug companies and insurance companies a lot of money. Go figure, Joop. Some people just were raised wrong or for some reason don`t really care about people.
I don`t think dogs have this problem.

You tell them Joop!
Yes, things like that happen here - what good is all this technology when it puts many people out of honest jobs.. and then (near) tragedy happens anyway? Surprised this incident did not make them bring back the human bridgetenders, though..
