Le Grand Phare, the main lighthouse on Īle d'Yeu, was constructed in 1950.
It was designed by the French architect Maurice Durand (1884-1978).
It is the third lighthouse serving the site. The original tower, constructed in 1830,
was destroyed by German troops near the close of World War II.
The lighthouse is 37.5 metres tall (123 ft). It is one of two lighthouses on the island designed
by Durand. The other is that at the Pointe des Corbeaux, which was also constructed in 1950.
