The ravages of old age

Sahraa is now 13, according to the estimate of the shelter we adopted her from in 2010 after she was rescued from a fire in Kuwait and flown to Washington for adoption. She has been the absolute sweetest companion, traveling all over the world with us, to Budapest, Riyadh, Portland and now DC.

A few months ago we noticed that her behavior was changing significantly and her memory failing as well as suddenly going deaf. A lifelong creature of habit, she was doing the complete opposite of what she had always done, which got more extreme as the days went by. We asked the vet if dogs could lose their “mental acuity” and was told that Sahraa was suffering from Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome, which is similar to Alzheimer’s in humans and can’t be cured. She prescribed a very expensive medication that may alleviate some of the symptoms and make her life more comfortable. I hope it works because it breaks my heart to see her going through this, and in all honesty it has made our lives more challenging as well in trying to accommodate her. Time will tell.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly unsharp.

I do hope that the medication helps Sahraa in this difficult time for her, Helen. So sad to see her failing, she is such a lovely companion for you both.

Ouch that is not nice to hear, I hope and pray that the medication can help her, of course it is life and old age but it still hits hard every time it happens to a dear friend and a beloved roommate. strength to you and I am keeping my fingers crossed.

This just makes me so sad. Old age is the pits, and it hurts to see our dogs seemingly suddenly become old and change their behaviour. I sinceely hope the new meds will help Sahraa. V

I pray the medication can help. Deafness alone is not a big issue. Older dogs can live happy lives with a major change in both their hearing and vision. Much more adaptable than humans, dog just seem to learn to adjust without any major distress. However, a change in mental acuity is heart breaking. That is a change in personality. Knowing how much Sahraa means to you, I can understand the emotional pain Tim & you must now be experiencing because of this diagnosis. However, I've read that - although doggy dementia is incurable - there are things that pet parents can do to slow down its progression and to provide a comfortable normal life span. Maybe the new medicine will be the silver bullet to help Sahraa. She's always been such a sweet dog who loves her daddy. And her human mom, too.

Poor baby. I hope the medicine helps. Watching fur babies decline is difficult and heartbreaking.

It makes me sad to hear that, poor baby, you all shared so much love together and she had a royal life with you guys. Our furry friends don't live as long as we do

So hard to see them get old. Della’s hearing is really bad now too and she is on a very expensive medicine for arthritis. Hope the meds they prescribed for Sahraa help her.

Hi Helen, I feel I have become acquainted with Sahraa through your photos and appreciate what a fine dog she has been for you. We have two small dogs that are old now also and we watch them change, even as we are too. They are great companions and fill one's life full of joy.
Dan Greenberg31-Jul-2022 15:34
Sorry to hear that about Sahraa. Emma is going through a similar stage and she is also about 12 or 13 now. Sometimes she is great and sometimes she seems really confused and unsure of what she is doing or wants. I can fully sympathize with you.
