I read that this street sign decoration had gone missing, but turned out, it was right where it was supposed to be. One of the alphabet animals – viceroy butterflies – is definitely gone, we think because the city changed the signage and street lights in that intersection.

The Capitol Hill Alphabet Animal Art Project, funded by the District of Columbia government and executed by the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, comprises animals and insects on lamp posts and street signs representing the name of the relevant street, something like when a parent would tell their child, "G St... G is for Grasshopper." Over the years the project was expanded to include 20 such decorations in SE Capitol Hill, although one of them has unfortunately disappeared. Some of the pictures here also appeared in my scavenger hunt gallery as well.
Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly
unsharp.
