Kayakers were out in force in Kingman Lake, which is actually part of the Anacostia River. I’m not sure what the guy on the right was trying to point out to the others, but he did catch their attention.

Kingman Island and Heritage Island are situated in the Anacostia River and part of Northeast and Southeast Washington, D.C. Both islands are manmade, built from material dredged from the Anacostia and completed in 1916. They’re rugged but beautiful islands, perfect for hiking and biking, which also have an extensive wetlands area.
I didn’t even know they existed until a neighbor said he often walked his dog there. It must have taken us 10 minutes to drive to the islands from our house. Amazing that such places exist within the city limits!
