Public Vault

The public vault was used to keep bodies whose arrangements to be buried elsewhere were finalized, for reasons I don’t totally understand. The remains of over 6,000 individuals have been held in this vault. The Public Vault was built in 1835 for $5,000, and repaired in 2005 at a cost of $35,000.

Thanks to William Barletta for eliminating the distortion in this image.

I looks pretty sinister and scary. Another one of those strange but true things I had never previously heard about. Great image of it! ~BV~

Strange indeed. Maybe they had to save some money first to give a decent burial.
