By Rula Halawani, born in East Jerusalem, where she still lives, and taken during Operation Defensive Shield, the Israeli incursion into the West Bank in 2002 at the time of the second Palestinian Intifada. “’Untitled XIII’ is a haunting depiction of a woman whose daughter had been shot dead in front of her eyes, moments before her home was demolished. She extends her arms out as she shows her daughter’s fourth-year university schoolbooks. The curtain of the window in the only standing wall of her home seems to blow gently behind her, while the foreground is a chaos of rubble and wire cables.”
