Al-‘Ula, 380 kilometers north of Medina, was located on the incense route and used to be the capital of the ancient Lihyanites in the sixth to fourth centuries B.C. Although our hotel was located in Al-‘Ula, we really only visited this one area in the city proper (for dinner) where there was a citadel high up on a rock and some buildings from the old town that have been restored.
