The sad tale of the 'golden' handbag

The shopping mall at Kingdom Centre is very upscale and does have a lot of shops one would find at such a mall in any other country. I wasn’t there to shop, but rather to look, and so wasn’t even attracted to anything except this handbag. The store was closed for prayer for quite a long time, but I was determined to learn the price so made a point of going back when it was finally open. To my shock, it was SAR 19,700, or something more than $5,000. I was floored.

It was a designer bag by Dolce and Gabbana, and I did check at home online, and that indeed is around the going price from what I could see, although a bit cheaper from some company in Italy. It would have looked great with my abayas, but needless to say I’ll be sticking with my much less glittery but nice enough looking shoulder bag from Washington, which I had to buy because I can’t wear my usual backpack with these garments.

Nice looking bag, Helen. I haven't spent that much money for a camera. Yep, I think that they have way to much money over there. Very nice capture. V.

Phew ! I wonder what the one shoe cost (ha ha). Looks a bit like a four leafed clover. I can't imagine paying anything like that for a purse ! You've captured this beautifully - some interesting looking stuff in the bg !! V

Go for it, Helen. Nobody would ever suspect you had a camera in there. Beautiful composition. I like the curve tangent to the top edge and the angled line to the lower right corner. V

alas it's an indulgence for the wealthy....certainly an eye-catcher though..

Wow! It is attractive, but what a price!

Definitely not an everyday item. But I think that is the price range for designer bags.

I can think of a much better way to spend $5,000. ;-)

Perfect shot of an exquisite product.

A beautiful bag with gorgeous detailing! Why they've matched the pattern too ~ thus adding to the cost. ;)
Unfortunately, this bag doesn't appear to be large enough to hold my 7D.... V

Wow, stunning bag! But its only a handbag... Great shot and lovely colors. V

Very nice and detailed handbag, but not for my wallet. Well seen, Helen. V

Only $5,000? A bargain compared to the $38,500 bag they wouldn't like Oprah see in Switzerland! I picked up a lovely cross-the-body handbag yesterday which will neatly hold my cellphone, wallet and incidentals, for $11, and I'm thrilled. It's all about functionality for me!

I think you need a trip to Thailand to get some-one to make you a stupendous beaded bag which you can flaunt with pride. Maybe it's got real gold? There are times when I feel I am regarded as little more than 'walking wallet' by some poeple, and other times when I look at the craftsmanship and I feel like offering more than is asked, just for the joy of their good work. There was one place out along the Tha Phae Road which I really liked, where the prices were good and the clothing was really artistic. I will go there if I ever get back to Chiang Mai, and I won't haggle even for an instant!
