The Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge) was originally built in 1670 and is the most recognizable from among Amsterdam’s 1,400 or so bridges. It was constructed of African azobe wood so it would last at least 50 years, although it was widened in 1871 and renovated most recently in 1969. Several times a day the bridge master lets boats through, then jumps on his bicycle and opens up the Hoge Sluis bridge. (from “Eyewitness Travel Amsterdam”)
This and the drawbridge in the previous picture look like they're being raised, but they aren't.
