The blown glass pieces are marked with felt tip pens with a grid pattern. This guides the finishers in cutting in the faceting seen on the finished items. The glass cutters must be intimately familiar with a large number of patterns - something over 600 different ones that they memorize during their apprenticeship which lasts about 5 years
