A baby osprey cozy in its nest atop a bundle of pilings left over from the steamboat era, barely
notices the passage of eastbound Train 564. The 1822 feet of timber pile trestle to the west
of the lift span bisects an island in the middle of the river where a small pole yard is located.
Replacing the timber in the bridge is an ongoing process. Eyeballing the pilings, we made an
educated guess that they were approximately 60 feet long. Prior to the early 1940s there was
another 1.7 miles of trestle to the east of the lift span. This section was filled when traffic
to and from the Trail smelter reached unprecedented levels during the war years.
