Keti Koti is een jaarlijks terugkerende feestdag ook wel Dag van de vrijheden en Kettingsnijden genoemd in Suriname. Het is een herdenking van de afschaffing van de slavernij. In Suriname heet deze dag officieel 'Dag der Vrijheden' Het is een feestdag voor alle inwoners en niet alleen voor de nazaten van de slaven. De gebruikelijke naam is Keti Koti wat 'gebroken ketenen', of manspasi (emancipatie) betekent. Op 1 juli 1863 schafte Nederland de slavernij af in Suriname en op de Nederlandse Antillen. De dag wordt sindsdien als feestdag gevierd. Er kwamen circa 40.000 (Afrikaanse) slaven vrij. Het zware werk op de plantages moesten ze nog tien jaar blijven doen. Keti Koti (Sranantongo for "the chains are cut"), July 1, is the Emancipation Day (end of slavery) in Suriname. The day is also known as (Prisiri) Manspasi, meaning "Emancipation (Festival)". Slavery was abolished by the Netherlands in Suriname in 1863. However, slaves in Suriname would not be fully free until 1873, after a mandatory 10 year transition period during which time they were required to work on the plantations for minimal pay and without state sanctioned torture. After 1873 many slaves left the plantations where they had suffered for several generations, in favor of the city of Paramaribo. Starting in 2009 several cities in the Netherlands hosted various activities, making this day a day of national celebration and remembrance throughout the country. (Source: Wikipedia)
