Paranuncia gigantea, a giant Opilionid

Cradle Valley, Tasmnania, Australia

Don't panic, this isn't a spider, honest! It is what is known as a harvestman, or opilionid. They live beneath rotting logs in the
rainforest of south-west Tasmania, and I suspect that this species is a communal egg-layer. Opilionods differ from spiders in
several ways. They do not make a web, and while spiders have two main parts to their body, the cephalothorax and the abdomen,
the Opilionids have only one. They are sometimes called Daddy-long legs, a name also applied to crane flies and spiders of the
genus Pholcus.
