Le chamois est l'un des emblêmes du massif des Vosges. Il n'y est pourtant arrivé que dans les années cinquante.
Il y est réintroduit en 1956, à la faveur d'un cadeau diplomatique fait par l'Allemagne à la France.
Il y aurait aujourd'hui entre 800 et 1200 individus dans le massif, selon les estimations.
