We had a young beaver take up residence in our pond several winters in a row. The second one was far more active and ambitious than the first, and created this fairly substantial dam. The dam actually helped us because it deepened the pond, but certain visitors kept breaking the dam, probably thinking they were doing us a favour, despite notices erected asking that people refrain from damaging it.
