  When the Simpsons went on TV (which I don't watch, by the way), towns by the name of Springfield around the country claimed to be it.  The originator of The Simpsons, from Oregon, revealed which town it was actually based on - http://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/Matt-Groening-Reveals-the-Location-of-the-Real-Springfield.html
