Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) from Herman Creek Trailhead 2014 05 (May) 16

Hiking time: 370 minutes and 45.73 seconds, or 6 hours and 11 minutes. It was very windy, but in most places because of heavy forest cover, I could only hear the wind, not feel it. Occasionally, on open ridges I did feel it and it was chilly. I got on the trail at 7:10 AM when it was 55°, yet I didn't wear my thick long sleeve shirt, only a thin short sleeve shirt, and my shorts. So I was quite cool. At my high point, I put my long sleeve shirt on and was more comfortable on the way down.

Took 181 photos of which 76 made the cut. I used the 12-40mm f/2.8 lens on the way up and the 40-150mm lens on the way down. On my hike I climbed 2,300 feet in 3 hours. Not bad for me. About 8 miles round trip. But this is not where I intended to go, and I didn't find this out until just now when I studied the map. I didn't want to go up the PCT, I wanted to go down it, to get to Dry Creek Falls! That's what my intended destination was. Instead I headed up the PCT to an elevation of 2,175 feet (the extra 125 feet came in when I descended to the bridge over Herman Creek, which is bigger than both Multnomah Creek and Eagle Creek and really spectacular).

Next time, to make sure I get to Dry Creek Falls, I need to start at Bonneville Dam, not Herman Creek Trailhead. Choosing this route, there should be no descent on the way to my destination. It should actually be a much easier hike than what I did today.

One nasty thing on this hike: poison oak everywhere! After hiking for four hours with only one break, I was getting careless and without even thinking about it, I sat down right in a patch of poison oak! I sat there taking a water and food break, then stood up and saw that I where I was sitting was surrounded by poison oak. Then I noticed that I'd laid my pack right in the middle of the stuff! When I got home, I quickly stripped naked and tossed all my clothes in the washing machine and scrubbed myself down in the shower. I don't know how I'm going to purify my pack!
