Eternal Magic of Mayan Chichen-Itza

Chichen-Itza, a stunning tribute to glory of Mayan empire and their cultural heritage, was abandoned as a city almost 350 years before first Spanish conquistador made his way to it through jungles. The Mayan nation has simply exhausted itself in endless wars led by numerous kings. Before its dramatic decline, Chichen-Itza served as cultural and religious centre in Mayan life rather than as place of residence, except for priests and members of noble families. I visited this place for the second time and still was overly exited by the accomplishments of this mysterious civilization. All pictures were rendered with PS7 as I've got rid of all tourists, including myself :-). The Masterpiece, El-Castillo ( or The Castle ),- tollest pyramid is still in "sacrificial" mode,- every once a while someone loses life after falling down from steppy stairs... Way to the top is not a physical challenge at all, but there are no guards... Don't endanger your life while being on holidays, nothing is worth it... Excellent imagery. The coloring is excellent. Anyone who has ever visited Mexico can attribute to the prodigious use of brilliant colors. It is only appropriate to apply a sense of what these structures looked like so many years ago.

Great shots. I was there about 20 years ago and these bring back good memories. I need to scan my film pix of the trip. I did make it to the top, inside El Castillo, as Dennis below refers to. Indeed it was skanky in there and a bit scary, you got the impression that your family would be cursed for 1000 years for having gone in there. I got to see the jaguar at the top. I also recommend Coba and Tulum for the travel-minded.

To amend my comments: it would be interesting if you posted a separate gallery (perhaps linked to this one) of the images (could just be a subset) without the tourists erased. Your comments about el castillo are well taken. The steps are pitched incredibly steeply, and tripping could easily mean a broken neck, and not for those with acrophobia. But I ran down anyway (every day you are alive, you take a risk) and I think the people climbing up, judging by their expressions, were more frightened than I was. Again, very pretty images.

Eldar, This is a beautiful gallery (as are your others). I visited Chichen-Itza several years ago and found it (along with other Mayan ruins) just fascinating. Can you still climb the Castillo up the inside? It's also steep, but the bad part is the extreme humidity, the very narrow tunnel/steps, and the "aroma" of all the people before you who have made the climb. It's worth it, though, since there is a sculpture of Quaqyutal (sp?) at the room at the top. Did you take the tour bus from Cancun that stops at the place that sells the liter bottles (with plastic snap-on tops) of the anisette-like liquor? You're evidentally quite a world traveller.
