Bodrum, Turkey

Bodrum is like Mykonos but larger and not quite as charming. It has become a hot resort area and it has a very nice harbor with lots of sail boats. On the harbor is a lovely castle which we toured. The castle is now a museum and displays relics found in ships that wrecked nearby. Both Lil and I were under the weather, so the afternoon was spent on ship resting. Those who visited the city said it was very nice.Bodrum is the home of the Tomb of King Mausolos. When he died, his wife built a hugh tomb the became one of the wonders of the ancient world and gave rise to the term "mausoleum"
The most prominent feature of Bodrum is the castle of St. Peter.
The castle's origins date back to the knights of St. John
This group of expatriates began in the 11th century with a church and hospital in Jerusalem. Although belonging to he Catholic religion care was denied to no-one.
When the knights arrived they instructed their builders to remove all usable materials from the tomb of King Mausolos as the castle construction began in the 1400's.
