The cathedral is the seat of the (Episcopal) Bishop of New York, and is named for the author of the Book of Revelation. The western facade naturally contains some apocalyptic themes in the carvings. The cathedral itself is very clearly incomplete, and incorporates a strange mix of Byzantine and Gothic styles. The central crossing is in the form of a dome, and is unfinished on the outside. A fire in 2001 set back continued construction of the cathedral, and it is not clear how construction will continue in the future.
