Spent a long weekend in New York. While I've been there several times over the years, it's been a long time since we did any real tourist sightseeing - so there's this gallery!
First set of images: we got to town on Wednesday afternoon, and after a pilgrimage to BH Photo (where we made an offering and received a mini-tripod for the SD700) and dinner, we headed over to the Empire State Building. Since the rain was in the process of blowing out of town, there was no line, and the top wasn't too crowded - and had some nice post-rain clear skies. A note about the ESB - for "security" reasons, they won't let you take any photos of the lobby area - and no full-size tripods allowed. Bring a mini-tripod or beanbag for your point-and-shoot backup if you go especially in the evening.
Second set of images: on the plate for the next day...after a few stops on the way, the recently remodeled Museum of Modern Art. While MoMA will not allow you to bring a big camera bag on the premises, they do allow non-flash photography in all of their galleries. Unfortunately, this has the side effect of having people with cameras jogging through the exhibitions, capturing photos of the famous paintings, presumably to print and decorate their own walls at some point (probably without white balancing or noise reduction). Very strange approach to museum going. After MoMA - Rockefeller Center, Grand Central Station, and the Chrysler Building (which has a nice lobby, but unfortunately has no access elsewhere in the building.)
Third set of images: Staten Island Ferry round trip, subway to Brooklyn Heights, walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, then Lower Manhattan. Not much to say other than the skies weren't as cooperative.
Fourth set of images: Starts with a visit to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Morningside Heights. This cathedral has been under planning, repair, and construction since the late 1800s, and is still quite far from completion. The west facade (main entrance) is complete, and contains quite a few contemporary subjects in the figures. Also somewhat jarring is the Peace Fountain on the grounds, which is quite unusual. The remaining photos are miscellaneous sights from the last full day in NY.
