The New Carissa ran aground in 1999, and started leaking fuel. In the course of getting pounded by the waves and attempts to remove the fuel, the ship broke in half. After many misadventures (including the bow section breaking its tow line and drifting free up the coast to run aground again), the bow was finally towed out to sea and sunk. Fortunately, it appears that damage to the environment was minimal for the situation.

At this point, the stern half of the New Carissa will be on the beach in Coos Bay for the foreseeable future.
