A macro lens with a fairly open shutter was focused on the light & magenta areas of this Christmas cactus's pistil. Closer to the lens (almost touching the lens) was an unopened bud positioned directly between the lens and the focal point. The closeness of the bud coupled with the open lens aperture threw this nearby bud totally out of focus and caused it to appear as a soft red mist enveloping the subject. The shape of the bud which paralleled and mimicked the subject pistil made the "mist" appear halo-like around the pistil rather than uniformly covering the entire picture space.
