11/13/07 - Sunset at El Capitan

In the Merced River, Yosemite National Park, viewing the sun's final rays at sunset painting the top of El Capitan with a red glow. The six second exposure time really smoothed out the water (six because it was a lot darker than this image would have you believe).
One of the hardest things in doing nature photography is being at the right place at the right time - in this case in the river at sunset. Admittedly I was just in the shallow water near the bank, but getting this old body there over boulders on the bank was a challenge (a challenge I didn't meet on one trip over the boulders where I went butt over teakettle along with the camera on the tripod. Luckily I saved the camera from a hard landing - but not my body. Gotta' keep your priorities straight and protect the camera.) Although not the case here, sometimes getting to/from a sunrise/set location means wandering around in the dark in places where I have enough trouble even in the light. But that all adds to the "charm".... If it were easy then everyone would do it and I want my peace & solitude - so go when/where others don't.

Great shot Ed. Can't agree more about being there.... Good thing camera was saved. Great reward for the effort. Vote.

Worth the effort Ed. I totally understand both the drive to get the shot, and the need to save the equipment. Took a good tumble at Yosemite myself, climbing around on some rocks with the wrong shoes. Beautiful shot!
