3/2/07 - Winter Resident

Admittedly, Northern Virginia isn't the frozen arctic but it does get cold occasionally. During February ponds like this one were frozen solid for over a week. At times like that I worry about a pair of resident Great Blue Herons - what do they eat when they and dinner are on opposite sides of a sheet of ice. Obviously my worry is unfounded because they appear to be well.
You can see a thin layer of ice near shore; beyond the heron it was still an inch or two thick. The heron found a small clear area to fish.

We have these Herons down here in the Northern Neck of Virginia. I worried about one in particular that lived along the Potomac and in a large pond complex right next to me. When things froze, I didn't see him/her at all. I read in our local paper than someone had this concern also and had mobilized an effort to bring all the cranes they could from here and from Southern Maryland to a commercial nursery near here. The birds were then kept in a hay-filled greenhouse over the cold, with vets taking care of those who had been harmed by the cold. I kind of doubted they had taken the crane from my pond, so I worried. But just the other day I saw the crane once again sitting on a log looking for food. It really made me feel good. They are such beautiful creatures.
