2/16/06 - Old Rag

Off to Skyline Drive; only 1/3 of it was open due to ice & snow.
This is a view of Old Rag from about milepost 46 or 47. Had to tromp through some deep snow to get to a vantage point that had a foreground element. This was an experiment to see if I could frame the view with branches less than a foot from the lens and keep the entire scene in sharp focus. At a wider focal length the answer is yes, but at 70mm - which gave the composition that I wanted - the answer is no. At first this image bothered me, but as I looked at the subject (the mountain) the framing branches seemed entirely natural (the way we'd actually see them) even though slightly out of focus.

You're right. It works because you wouldn't be focusing on the branches anyway. Nice job.
